NEWS: EA Giving Away Free Games

Whilst just one title is currently available to download free of charge, more games are to be added eventually.

A new promotion known as On The House has launched, which has an initiative to provide free content on a regular basis via the Origin webstore. Origin claims:

"There's no catch. Grab full games, expansions and more at absolutely no cost. Just make sure to act fast because On The House specials can appear and disappear at any time."

This could be an attempt to ease the frustrations of many PC gamers as recent criticisms against EA and Origin has emerged. Currently, the 2008 survival-horror Dead Space is available to download - the original price stands at £9.99..

NEWS: Microsoft Discuss Halo 2 Anniversary's Multiplayer

The multiplayer aspect in the highly anticipated Halo 2 remake would have "to be fantastic."

Speaking with IGN, Microsoft Game Studies boss Phil Spencer has highlighted some of the most important features which would have to be included in the Halo 2 remake.

Spencer initially discusses important moments during the original release of Halo 2 back in November 2004:

"In this fiticious world where that game existed", he says whilst smiling according to IGN - "it's an easy answer: it has to be just the multiplayer experience that we all found in that first Halo 2 game. If you think about what happened in the franchise and what were the hallmark moments - when did duel wielding come in, when did another playable character that wasn't Master Chief come in?"

More notably, Spencer goes on to speak on the multiplayer:

"All of the things that you and I know about the evolution of the franchise, if you're going to say one thing about Halo 2, you're going to talk about real multiplayer. I think you just have to nail that in just such a fundamentally core way. Frankly [we'd have to do it] probably better than we did with Halo 1 Anniversary. I thought the multiplayer in Halo 1 Anniversary was good, but Halo 1 never had multiplayer in the truest sense, so it always was going to be something different."

Although Spencer only speaks in a way which indicates the anniversary remake is yet to be announced, Master Chief's voice actor Steve Downes recently said:

"What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2."

Halo 2 was one of the most successful titles to incorporate online multiplayer during the lifespan of the original Xbox - the servers were shut down April 2010.

NEWS: Sony Still Enthusiastic For DriveClub

Sony has released a statement regarding progress of the PS4-exclusive racing title.

Despite its original plan to be released during the PS4 launch last year, DriveClub is still heavily in development according to a new statement issued by Sony.

A Sony spokesperson spoke with Computer and Video Games, saying:

"The announced studio changes across WWS have not affected the development of DriveClub or the DriveClub team, which has always had great direction and continues to do so."

"We have full confidence that the game will deliver on its PS4 promise to be the first truly socially connected racing title and we are very pleased and excited by the calibre of work from Evolution Studios."

"The progress being made on the game is spectacular, so we're looking forward to sharing an update on development, release date and videos of the game in action in the weeks to come. We thank you for your patience and assure you, it will be worth the wait."

Unfortunately, no specific date has been set for the game's release, however an official release date is to be confirmed in the following weeks to come.

NEWS: The Last of Us Coming to PS4

Perhaps Naughty Dog's most celebrated game is heading for a PS4 release.

PlayStation spokesperson Sercan Sulan has stated there will be an eventual PS4 release of the highly acclaimed post-apocalyptic game; The Last of Us.

The news was brought to attention through Multiplayer during a video presentation, however Sulan is Turkish - thankfully IGN managed to translate key points:

"There is no information about a new The Last of Us game but I can share this knowledge; as of this summer, The Last of Us will be on the PS4. Both on PSN and physically."

"The PS4 version will also include the DLC so you will be able to play 'Left Behind' as well."

Since its release, The Last of Us has played host to a range of nominations and awards - more recently it was awarded best action & adventure as well as best overall game at the BAFTA Games Awards 2014.

NEWS: Peter Molyneux Discusses Indie Games

Industry veteran has shared his thoughts on the indie gaming scene.

Perhaps most famous for creating the Fable and Populous games, legendary games developer Peter Molyneux believes the indie gaming phenomenon won't last very long.

Speaking with Computer and Video Games at this year's Game Developers Conference, Molyneux firstly compares indie gaming to the music industry:

"Don't think we're going to be all indies for the next five years - these things go in cycles, just like in the music business. You have a time where punk is big, and then you have times like now where everything is manufactured."

"Enjoy this time, because inevitably it will only last a short period."

He then goes on to discuss indie developers teaming up with potential investors, saying:

"Here's the thing: walk through any hotel lobby at GDC and look at people's name badges. This morning at breakfast I saw three angel investors talking to indies. They're saying, 'take my money! I want to invest in your company!'

"But what those indie companies don't realise is that they'll then have to have board meetings, and in those meetings they'll be told, 'no, you shouldn't do that - look a this game that's making money'."

Molyneux isn't against the idea of indie gaming, in fact he praises those who have "no sense of fear" when creating and distributing their games, much like developers during the 80s, and how modern developers can relate to that particular era:

"Back then anybody could create a game that could be hugely successful. There were no formulas or anything cast in stone."

"Now it's all about invention, creativity and not having any fear."

NEWS: Nintendo Won't Appear At PAX East 2014

Nintendo has announced they will not be attending this year's event.

Since the first Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East event in 2010, Nintendo has always been around, often showing off promising titles such as Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD - however, this year will tell a very different story.

Speaking with Polygon, a Nintendo spokesperson has said:

"Interacting directly with our fans and letting them play our games firsthand is a key component of our approach."

"That doesn't include PAX East this year, but we will offer our fans a variety of opportunities to get their hands on Nintendo products in 2014."

Sony will not be attending this year's event either, however other big companies including Microsoft, Square Enix, Blizzard, 2K Games, Double Fine, Twitch, Oculus VR, and Ubisoft are to make an appearance showing off their respective products.

NEWS: RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Coming To PC

Atari has reassured players there will be a PC release of RollerCoaster Tycoon 4.

With the recent announcement that RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile will be arriving on iOS this summer, many dedicated fans of the franchise have had their concerns regarding an actual PC release - Atari has since eased any anxieties, promising the PC version to be a "completely different game".

Speaking with Digital Spy, Atari's Senior Director of Marketing Anthony Chien has discussed the PC release, saying:

"We can't share that much, but [PC] will definitely be a complete different game."

Chien then goes on to talk about fans of the series and Atari's priority of working on mobile before PC:

"There's a lot of diehard RC fans that want a PC experience, they want all different sorts of things. It's trying to deliver as much as we can. First is the mobile version, then it's the PC experience."

"I think a lot of people are vocal about wanting to see the PC version first before the mobile, but our strategy is mobile first."

RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 will be available on iOS during the summer with no specific date yet set, and will be priced at $2.99 (£1.80 / €2.15 approx).

NEWS: Rocksteady Discuss Arkham Knight's Villain Redesigns

Whilst memorable villains are taking part in Arkham Knight, they might look a little different.

In a feature with Game Informer, Arkham Knight's Art Director David Hego, has discussed redesigns of three very well-known villains within the Batman universe, including Penguin, Two Face, and The Riddler.

When speaking on the Penguin, Hego said:

"We took the coat off, and the concept of Penguin was more of a dirty dude. Obviously his shirt is rolled up and sweaty, and he food stains on it. But still, he's really powerful. He's got a golden chain, as well. We had to be a bit crazy with this character, and working with his design. And we shaved his head. He's proper filthy, you know. It makes you want to punch him even more."

It seems not much was altered with the appearance of Two Face besides giving him a new next-gen sheen:

"We just rolled up his sleeves and made him look really next-gen. We took some references of really filthy, burnt flesh - which is what we do most of the time, which is quite cool - and tried to make him look as badass as we could."

Finally, Hego speaks on the infamous Riddler, who has a habbit of constantly changing appearance:

"If you had to work overtime, for example, you would start the night with your jumper on and everything, and as the time went by you'd probably take your jumper off, open your shirt, take your tie off, have a coffee. The Riddler is a character who has a cool framework, and we didn't want to change it too much - we like his shirts with question marks and silly glasses and greasy hair."

Batman: Arkham Knight is to hit shelves October 14 on Xbox One, PS4, and Windows.

NEWS: DICE Details Battlefield 4 Naval Strike DLC Maps

The latest Battlefield 4 DLC will include four new multiplayer maps.

Developer DICE has spoke in-depth on each map that is to be available in the upcoming Naval Strike DLC pack - a set of new multiplayer maps which are based on the ideologies behind naval warfare.

Lost Islands

"Starting with Lost Islands, this map focuses around a crashed airplane located near the center of the map. The map itself contains several small islands surrounding the crash site that can be traversed using quad bikes around the whole map, or by using boats (including the new hovercraft) to take shortcuts across it. The key to master this map is to control the plane at the crash site, which can be blown open to give infantry some much needed cover. Another special area of this map is the cave blanketed by a waterfall, as it provides visual cover for patrolling boats and helicopters."

Nansha Strike

"Nansha Strike is a very boat heavy map with several bases spread out in the water to battle it out on, while at the same time allowing total infantry control of the middle areas. The central area provides a lot of cover for infantry and is a death trap for water vehicles if they try to enter it via the small rivers. The surrounding bases can be captured from the water, with some offering big bases in the middle of the sea for infantry. This is where the more powerful vehicles spawn, which makes them key to own and control."

Wave Breaker

"Wave Breaker has a unique submarine base hidden in the middle mountain which allows for tight close quarter combat, but it also has wide canals where it’s possible to do drive-bys with the attack boats to add extra mayhem to the mix. The middle area has many different Levolution possibilities. You can for instance bring down a submarine from its support and turn off the lights in the surrounding corridors. It’s also possible to stop boats from entering the area by closing the four flood gates and blocking the direct path from the bases on the two sides. The middle island will give players intense fights in Deathmatch modes."

Operation Mortar

"Operation Mortar is our vacation paradise turned into a war zone, with wooden huts surrounding the islands. There is an old fort on the top of the mountain, which provides a great overview over the whole map. It also gives the team owning it a fast way to capture the other bases on the main island. In Rush, this levels starts from the bottom of the islands and goes up towards the fort, providing interesting and fun vertical gameplay which will provide a big challenge for attackers."

Naval Strike will be available at an earlier date of March 25 exclusively for premium players, whilst April 8 marks the release date for general purchase.

Igarashi has sent out a letter describing why he has made the decision to leave Konami:

"I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make - the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well."

"Leaving Konami was a big decision, and not one I took lightly - I've spent my entire career there, made many friends, and had a lot of great opportunities - but I hope all the gamers and fans who have supported me in the past will join me in being excited about what comes next. Wish me luck!"

Notable works of Igarashi include Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, among others. His last day working for Konami was March 15.

Each character has their own respective traits, strengths and weaknesses - the Wizard has the ability to cast powerful magic whilst lacking the high defence of the Valkyrie, who is able to sustain large amounts of damage.

The Warrior can deal the most melee damage, whilst finally the Elf can maneuver through the game at rapid speeds, making him the fastest member of the group.

As seen in the video below, the game will provide numerous procedural dungeons equipped with tons of enemies, all taking place in a hack n slash environment.

RETRO REVIEW: Thunder Fox

Thunder Fox might be one of the most under-rated gems in the retro scene.

Arcade | MegaDrive/Genesis | Xbox | PS2

Originally an arcade game, Thunder Fox was ported to the Mega Drive / Genesis and whilst it doesn't hold up to the original release, it's worth playing due the sheer amount of fun to be had.

In a world now full of terrorists who's mission it is to destroy all peace, it's up to two men simply known as Thunder and Fox to bring a sense or order back to civilization. To do this, they must take on violent enemies wielding all types of weapons ranging from simple knives to gigantic tanks and helicopters.

Honestly, there's not much to the narrative, but it doesn't really matter - games like this don't need a strong storyline to push the player forward. It's purely fast-paced action with an intent on giving the player a good time through addictive and often-challenging gameplay.

The first level, showcasing the machine-gun and some
of the more easier to kill enemies.
You have the option to choose between Thunder or Fox - it doesn't matter who you pick, there's no real difference except the colour of their clothes. Essentially, Thunder Fox is a side-scrolling shooter with hints of platforming - as soon as you start the game, you're put straight into the action - wielding just a knife you must take on hordes of enemies coming from both sides of the screen, much like Kung Fu on NES.

An encounter with Gonza, a pike-wielding
boss who gives you no mercy.
The knife is the only weapon that you can use throughout the entire game without having to worry about ammo, although it would be nice to give players the option to throw the knife instead of using it as purely a melee weapon, which can often be dangerous as you have to go (extremely) close up to an enemy to effectively stab them.

However, every level offers various guns at some point, whether it be from an enemy drop or hidden in a wooden box - these weapons include a machine gun, a flamethrower, a rocker launcher, and grenades. Each weapon has its advantages, for example the machine gun's bullets can travel far, making it easy to dispose of those pesky shooters hiding behind cover, whilst a blast from the rocket launcher will easily blow up a group of enemies.

Escaping an exploding "Air Fortress" - lots of
explosive sprites included.
All weapons come with a certain amount of ammo, so it's advised to tactically use the bullets when you really need them - it's not worth wasting ammo on one-hit enemies that could easily be killed with your knife or jump attack. The jump attack is actually an extremely effective way of getting through the game - during a jump, you become almost invincible for some reason, making it easy to plant your feet into the face of terrorists whilst taking no damage what so ever.

With a total of six stages, Thunder Fox is generally short, and it's to be expected considering it was originally an arcade game. Each stage is accompanied with a boss battle including a helicopter, a tank, a spear-wielding maniac, and so on - each subscribe to a certain attack pattern, which when memorised, can make these encounters fairly easy to overcome.

You'll have a lot of fun playing this game, and if you're up for a real challenge, it's worth cranking up the difficulty to the max - no matter how you play, Thunder Fox offers gameplay that resembles a combination of Contra and Altered Beast. This is one of those games that didn't get much attention when released due to other more popular titles taking up the limelight, but it's certainly worth playing - you won't regret it.  retroreview
